  • ✓ Keep strong contrast between foreground and background, dark modules on a light background scan far more reliably than light-on-light or similar tones.
  • ✓ Leave a quiet zone (blank margin) of at least 4 modules around the code; cropping too tight is a common cause of failed scans.
  • ✓ Test the printed or displayed code with at least two different phones before mass-printing it.
  • ✓ Prefer short URLs, the less data encoded, the simpler the pattern, and the more forgiving it is of smudges, glare, or curved surfaces.
  • ✓ Size the code for its scan distance: roughly 2×2 cm for a business card held close, but 10×10 cm or larger for a poster viewed from a few metres away.
  • ✓ Avoid placing a logo or image directly over the code unless you've tested it thoroughly, it reduces the effective error-correction margin.
